My favorite show as a kid

This wonderful show was my babysitter while my parents worked. I'd get home from school and watch the show every day. It's one of my fondest childhood memories.

Afternoon's infront of the TV in Hawaii as a kid in 1970.

My brother and I walked home from Lincoln elementary near punch powl, down to Spencer St then to our flat. We would turn on the BW tube and watch Checkers and Pogo. Then one day we were invited to be on the show. They would hold up a sign and it would say Cheer and we would. My memories of Hawaii are almost gone. I was there for only 4 years and then we left with my small family 2 sisters brother and mom and dad.

"Checkers & Pogo" was based on "The Wallace and Ladmo Show" here in Arizona. Take a look at the website www.wallacewatchers.com and see for yourself. One of the producers of Checkers worked at KPHO-TV in Phoenix and modelled their show after Wallace and Ladmo. Greetings to all the fans.

I remember that wonderful show from my hanabutta days. My friend had a birthday party on the show and I was invited to go on. I remember the Merry Unbirthday song and scooping pennies into Pogo's hat. I will never forget that show.

I remember watching that show with my niece and nephew as a teen in Hawaii 1977-78. We lived in Red Hill (Aliamanu Crater) and my brother was working at Tripler Army Hospital and I was a student (10th grade) at Radford High School. I can still hear the song "It's your birthday, the day you were born...) Great show!

Merry Un-Birthday
written by Della B , November 07, 2008
I remember being on the show and being selected as the merry un-birthday girl. They stopped the taping and asked if I could act more surprised. So I made sure that I acted surprised when they rolled the camera. I remember my hand being so small that I couldn't grab a lot of pennies and Pogo wrapped his huge hands around mine and helped my get a big handful. Wouldn't it be cool if they could have a reunion of all of the merry un-birthday kids? Such fond memories....
Mr. Checkers
written by Kate , November 20, 2008
My "Grandpa Jim" was James Demarest, the infamous (third and longest lasting) Mr. Checkers.

I'm 24 now, the show ran before I was even born. And I'm having no luck finding any clips from it. Anybody know where I can find clips or even order a video (if such a thing exists)?
I met Pogo as a child...
written by Daryl , January 25, 2009
In 1965 or 1967, I was a primary school child and my family lived in Honolulu. I believe that Pogo was a well known radio DJ then. At a carnival, I rode with him on a ferris wheel, where I believe he was aiming to break some record as a PR stunt. I have a signed photo, which I've kept to this day! I moved away from Hawaii the summer of 1967, and I gather that this was the very time that he made his move to children's TV.

When I was in HI from '71-'73, I watched and enjoyed this show. I have, to this day, adopted the way Pogo waved on the show. It's 10pm and I had a random thought of the show and had to find out what the net had aboout it. I do miss it.
Memories
written by Gordon Gary , June 10, 2009
Checkers and Pogo will forever be a cherished part of my childhood. Who could forget the inspired nutiness, the blatant product placement, the pies in faces?? This show was must-see TV for generations of keikis like me -- I only wish there were more videos of the old shows avaialable on YouTube! Aloha, Jim Hawthorne. Your show was Hawaii's babysitter for more than a decade.
