(Hana Hou - Revised) Looking back, on Hawaiian TV even before cable or home satellite. Anyone remember Kalani, the kid from the Ponderosa Pines real estate commercials. “Come and be my neighbor at Ponderosa Pines. Call now, for sure!” Before Mike Sakamoto, before Harry Kojima there was Let’s go fishing with Bruce Carter. Seemed like every shot of Bruce he was holding an Olympia Beer can. Harry Kojima was the show’s featured chef before getting his own time slot. Speaking of beer, who had a beer can yarn hat? Yeah, I know you did! You must have had that blue Pan Am bag too!
What about the old Lex Brodie’s Tire commercial? He always ended with “Thank you, very much” and who could forget his sign with the caveman carving the wheel, remember? One of Hawaii’s top news team was KGMB’s Bob Sevey and Linda Coble with Joe Moore on sports. Okay I admit, I watched the Hawaiian Moving Company when it was an all disco show hosted by Kamasami Kong.
Sports fans, do you remember the names of the UH Rainbow Warriors Fab Five? Al Davis, Dwight Holiday, John Penebacker, Jerome Freeman, and Bob Nash. I remember being so excited that the state-of-the-art Aloha Stadium was being built. Retractable for football and baseball, wow! I wish I still had my collectors edition baseball bat from the Hawaii Islanders. How about the lion tattoo on Andy Ganigan’s back? You remember watching him fight on Wide World Of Sports?
I know everyone remembers how fun it was, wind blowing in your face riding down the old Skyslide in Waipahu. Do you remember 25¢ for a school lunch? I used to go to school and eat two mid-mornings and two lunches for a buck. Now that’s a deal! You want deals? Try shopping at Wigwam, Holiday Mart, Kress Store, or Arakawa’s. I can still hear that chicken crowing. Best fried chicken in town, try the old Woolworth’s. And no even forget Pioneer Chicken. Did you ever wonder if you could climb that big pineapple water tower? Sorry all gone now.
I remember Yick Lung seeds from those huge glass jugs tasting a lot better than the now popular Jade seeds, what about you? Fruit Punch and Green River used to taste better back then too. Hmmmm… A refreshing Icee beverage, from Icee The Bear, oh yeah! Before Malolo Syrup, before Hawaiian Sun there was Hawaiian Delight. Don’t ever pull the tab, fold it over then drop it back into the can while your still drinking. Talk about choke, then you get cracks! My favorite drink was the concentrated Orangeade Exchange juice in the small orange and blue can. Anyone remember their jingle?
The longest-running and most beloved Hawaii kid show no doubt was The Checkers and Pogo Show. You can read my post on Checkers and Pogo here. Japanese super heros had a huge impact in the 1970s. I loved watching Kikaida, Kikaida 01, Kamen Rider V3, Zaboga, Diamond Eye, Rainbow Man, Go Rangers, Ultra-7, and yes even Robocon. Wish I still had all my toys! Read more about those superheros here.
Oh Yeah! The "Missing Link" on Wrestling Hawaii Friday nights! Tor Kamaka with his cigar, "Mr. Francis" I am the meanest... get more Wrestling Hawaii.
Wow, so much fun remembering all these things from Hawaii’s past. Makes me laugh, oh and laugh I did: Booga Booga, Kent Bowman, Andy Bumatai, Frank Delima, and of course Fate Yanagi’s boyfriend himself… Rap Reiplinger. Read more about Local Style Comedy.
